Canadian projects in the spotlight at MIPTV

Taking place in Cannes, France, from April 8 to 11, 2019, MIPTV is all about making global connections to help you develop, co-produce, finance, sell, or acquire awesome TV, digital, and audiovisual content projects. With more than 10,000 participants hailing from 100 countries at last year’s event, it’s pretty clear that this international content market is the place to be. With so much Canadian talent and content to get to our growing worldwide audiences, our presence at MIPTV this year is pretty exciting.

In addition to all the networking, events, and action going down at our Canada Pavilion, where we’re hosting more than 50 companies, Canada’s got a trio of webseries in the running in Canneseries’short-form competition; a project taking part in the International Format Awards race; a series in the International Emmy® Kids Awards; plus four Canadian projects pitching at In Development.

Let’s walk you through the list, shall we?

The Cannes International Series Festival (or Canneseries for short) takes place from April 5 to 10, and includes a section dedicated to short series formats. And, speaking of this second edition of the international jury competition, guess what? Three of Canneseries’ ten selected projects are Canadian webseries!

Directed by Julien Hurteau and produced by Zone 3, Téodore pas de H is a about a man with ADHD who decides to return to highschool for grownups. Mara Joly’s La maison des folles is a comedic drama about an unlikely friendship between troubled teens (produced by St Laurent TV, who also worked on Canadian webseries Dominos and last year’s Best Short form series winner). Jason Lapeyre’s Warigami is an action webseries where paper is a weapon (produced by First Love Films.

Next up, the dance competition series Révolution (produced by Group Fair-Play) is itself competing for Best Competition Reality Format at MIPFormats’s International Format Awards Gala Dinner on April 6, 2019. The project will also be featured in the panel presentation New Hits: All You Need Are Visual Effects, on April 6.

Our Canadian contender in the International Emmy® Kids Awards (happening April 9 at MIPTV) is Productions Avenida’s Jenny, a multiplatform series about a girl with leukemia and a positive attitude.

Meanwhile, if you dream of fast-tracking your project towards that bright green light (whether as a producer or creator) come through In Development, a cool competition co-organised by MIPTV and Canneseries. The initiative connects producers and creators with international decision-makers so the road between pitch and greenlight might just be a fast track.

Here are the four Canadian projects pitching this year:

In the Kids Live Action Pitch section, two out of five finalists are Canadian projects! We’ve got Anarchy Anderson (produced by Alberta’s Mosaic Entertainment) and Lady Ada’s Secret Society (produced by Ontario’s Coconut Effect Productions). Moving right along to the Drama Short Form Series Pitch, we’ve got the Vancouver, B.C.-based project Life XP (Ebnerds Multi Media Entertainment). And in the brand new Pre-school Animation Pitch category, Canada has Time out Tess (produced by Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Buffalo Gal Pictures).

Last but not least, don’t miss your chance to meet and greet with potential international partners at the Canadian Networking Reception we’re throwing for all our MIPTV and Canadian delegates, partners, and international friends! Feel free to join us April 9, 17.00-19.00 at the Canada Pavilion (located at Palais des Festivals).
