Going International: Canadian Producers at European Forums!

29 • 09

As a global leader in coproduction, Canada has established effective methods to support our producers on international stages, while making it easy for worldwide partners to do business with our talented industry and storytellers!

We’ve got audiovisual coproduction treaties or Memorandums of Understanding in place with close to 60 countries; we’re a proud member of Eurimages; and you can count on Canada to bring our powerful, engaging, and unique presence to film fests and markets around the globe.

We also support our homegrown producers by organizing their attendance to international development and networking forums! We’re excited to be facilitating the participation of three Canadian producers who have been chosen for two upcoming European workshops.

Here’s your scoop on these awesome opportunities:

ACE Producers

Telefilm Canada’s partnership with ACE (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen) provides a unique opportunity for one Canadian producer to participate in this annual executive education programme (with only three spaces open for producers from non-EU countries)! Producer Hany Ouichou of La Coop Vidéo de Montréal has been selected by ACE Producers network to take part in the upcoming ACE 31 programme.

A seasoned indie producer, Ouichou’s acclaimed work includes Mathieu Denis and Simon Lavoie’s 2016 feature Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves (Ceux qui font les révolutions à moitié n’ont fait que se creuser un tombeau), which won Best Canadian Picture at the Toronto International Film Festival before being presented at the Berlinale!

With the goal of developing his next feature, Mathieu Denis’ Buy Your Way to Heaven, Ouichou will head to Norway from October 4 to 9, 2021 for the first workshop of 2021-2022’s ACE programme, which trains members on the in’s, out’s, and many responsibilities of the film producer role. After attending all workshops, Ouichou will be able to join ACE Producers along with his cohorts in the programme. This Europe-based independent producer network is all about collaboration, professionalism, international coproduction, and sharing knowledge.

EAVE Producers Workshop

Thanks to a partnership between Telefilm Canada and EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs), two Canadian producers will be attending the third and last EAVE Producers Workshop, taking place November 8 through 15, 2021! Andrée-Anne Frenette from Terre Innue and Amber Ripley from Goodbye Productions (along with her project Elle) will head to Barcelona, Spain for this hybrid event. Susan King, Analyst, Business Affairs and Coproduction from Telefilm, will participate virtually.

So what’s EAVE all about? For producers looking to amp up their European coproduction skills, network, and knowledge, these three annual workshop events by the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs network is a place to learn, exchange, and network in this filmmaking landscape. Fifty producers are chosen annually, and working film, TV, and doc producers may be eligible to apply.

Want to take part in one of these forums? Our RDV Canada newsletter will send you the latest call-for-entries as soon as they’re open! Keep your eyes peeled for the next call for participants!
