2016 - Aisling Walsh’s Maudie

Canadian screenwriter Sherry White and producer Mary Sexton were among the many homegrown talents behind this Ireland-Canada coproduction based on late Canadian artist Maud Lewis. Starring Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins, the movie had a TIFF Special Presentation, Berlinale Gala Screening, and snagged seven Canadian Screen Awards — among them, Original Screenplay and Best Motion Picture.

2016 - Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World

This Canada-France coproduction scooped up the coveted Cannes Grand Prix, three Césars (including Best Director), and five Canadian Screen Awards (including Best Motion Picture and Achievement in Direction)! The flick was selected for TIFF Canada’s Top 10. Side note: At 30 years old, filmmaker Dolan has already directed eight features.

2015 - François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoan-Karl Whissell’s Turbo Kid

Fun fact: This directorial trio is known as Roadkill Superstar. Their Canada-New Zealand coprod won the Audience Award for Best Canadian Feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival, the SXSW Midnighters Audience Award, plus the Jury Award at the Sitges Film Festival, to name just a few.

2015 - Lenny Abrahamson’s Room

Adapted into a screenplay from her book by Irish writer Emma Donoghue, who makes Canada her home, this Canada-Ireland thriller got four Oscar noms (including best adapted screenplay, motion picture, and directing) and scooped up Oscar gold for Best Actress (Brie Larson, who won the same category at the Golden Globes! It won (count ’em) nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture.
