With 18 Canadian films in the mix, including three in official competition, Canada is strutting its stuff at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival, which takes place from June 16 to 25, 2018.
In order to develop new partnerships within the Asian market while building and solidifying relationships as well as exciting coproduction opportunities, Canada’s presence at this year’s festival will feature plenty of networking opportunities, Q&A sessions and more (in collaboration with the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai).
In addition to the 9 features being presented within our special Panorama Focus Canada section (feel free to scroll on down to the full list below) we’ve also got three films in official competition!
In the running for the Golden Goblet Awards, the festival’s main competition, are:
Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso’s A Translator, world premiered at Sundance before travelling to other festival such as the Guadalajara International Film Festival and San Francisco International Film Festival. In their feature debut, the director duo tells the tale of professor who translates for Chernobyl victims in 1989 Cuba.
Martin Laroche’s Tadoussac is about an 18-year old runaway searching for someone while working at a Tadoussac hostel. It was named Best Canadian Film at the 2017 Festival International du cinéma francophone en Acadie (FICFA), and its actress Camille Mongeau, won the Best Female Performance Award at the Festival du film francophone Namur (FIFF).Ann Shin’s documentary My Enemy, My Brother is about two men, enemies during the war between Iran and Iraq, who became blood brothers and decades later, journeyed together to Iran. This film has been making the rounds of the international festival circuit, including Hot Docs, Tribeca, and Boulder. It was also nominated for a Canadian Screen Award!
