Welcome to our latest Perspective Canada market screening: a curated program of Canadian genre films screening at FILMART, financed by Telefilm. To help solidify relationships with the Asian market, we have some exciting networking events planned for this year’s FILMART, which takes place in Hong Kong from March 19 to 22, 2018!
Since coproductions a big part of Canada’s thriving screen industry (about 60 coproductions each year, with a production volume of about$ 500 million), our Perspective Canada initiatives mean a lot! With the goal of increasing the international exploitation and exposure of selected films, we also love to build international relationships and show potential partners what our diverse industry can offer, including that special Canadian flavour! For this Perspective Canada market screening in Hong Kong, we’ve put together a curated program of six genre films for you to enjoy; mysterious horror, suspense, and drama movies that delve into such dark psychological themes as isolation, disappearance, confronting evil, and familial secrets of the past.
Here they are:
Directed by Calgary-based filmmaker Sandi Somers, Ice Blue is about a teen who must confront her family’s past when her mother (played by Michelle Morgan, known for her role on CBC’s Heartland) comes back. This thriller makes its international and market premiere at FILMART.
Juggernaut, a thriller directed by Daniel DiMarco, also explores an eerie homecoming when an outlaw, who doesn’t believe his mother died by taking her own life, heads back home.
Calgary filmmaker Mike Peterson’s Knuckleball, in its Asian premiere, is a horror/ suspense movie about a young boy whose grandfather (played by famed Canadian actor Michael Ironside) passes away, leaving him alone on a farm with secrets and danger.
Directed by Jordan Canning, Kris Booth, and Renuka Jeyapalan, Ordinary Days is anything but, featuring the perspectives of three characters (each shot by a different director of the trio) when a college student suddenly vanishes. This drama/ mystery/ thriller makes its international and market premiere at FILMART.
In its Asian and market premiere, Todd & the Book of Pure Evil: The End of the End follows three highschool friends who team up to fight evil and enemies! Based on the television series of the same name, this animated comedy/ horror is directed by Craig David Wallace and Richard Duhaney.
And finally, directed by Leo Scherman and set in WWI, Trench 11 is a horror/ thriller/ war flick about a group of Allies trapped with a terrifying biological weapon that turns men into murders. Canadian actor Rossif Sutherland stars.
